SUMMARY:Knox Trail Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Southborough Historical Commission\, in cooperation with the Southborough Historical Society\, is pleased to invite the public to a compelling historical presentation by Ben Haley: “Commemorating Henry Knox and the ‘Noble Train of Artillery’ in the Automobile Age.” \nThis free event will take place on Sunday\, March 15\, 2026\, at 2 p.m. at the newly opened Southborough History & Arts Center at Fayville Village Hall\, located at 42 Central Street\, Southborough. \n \nHenry Knox\, painted by Gilbert Stuart in 1806. A former book store clerk and street brawler\, Knox rose to become Major General and eventually Washington’s Secretary of War. \nThe 1920s Knox Trail marker project generated the interest in General Henry Knox’s Ticonderoga expedition that remains to this day. Yet despite a dedicated effort to find Knox’s exact route\, what the 1920s Knox Commission ended up marking was not that; rather\, it was what their chairman described as “a new Knox Trail” catering to automobiles. Historian Ben Haley has traced this little-known story—of why the markers were erected where they were—through the rich correspondence surviving in the collection of the Knox Commission. \nThe Southborough Historical Commission is sponsoring this talk in recognition of Southborough’s Knox marker\, located at 28 Main Street\, and in celebration of General Knox’s passage through Southborough 250 years ago\, dragging the 60 tons of artillery pieces that would bring about the end of the Siege of Boston on March 17\, 1776 (celebrated as Evacuation Day). \nAbout the Speaker:\nBen Haley is a historian and Director of the National Register of Historic Places Program for the Massachusetts Historical Commission. He also shares his expertise in the classroom\, teaching historic preservation at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. \nRESERVE YOUR SEAT TODAY: \nThe event is free and open to the public. However\, seating is limited and reservations are required. To reserve your place\, chose a quantity below and then click “Get Tickets.”

SUMMARY:Three Stand-Alone Poetry Workshops: The "Dark Basket of a Blank Page"
DESCRIPTION:“The unknown is the dark basket into which we plunge our hands to bring out words that feed the hungry and clothe the poor—as good a definition of poetry as we might find.”\n-David Whyte\nTo read a poem\, we face an unknown: what is this poet saying?  To write a poem\, we face a blank page: what do I have to say?  How will I say it?  While at times the unknown can be exciting\, often it is terrifying\, and it keeps us from doing the creative work we want to do.  In these three\, stand-alone workshops\, we will: \n• Practice how to read poetry more adeptly.\n• Enjoy the conversations that open up between poems and our fellow workshop participants.\n• Hone our own poetic craft through drafting a new poem in each session.\n• Leave with prompts for further independent writing and suggestions for revisions. \nAll levels of writing experience are welcome.  Suitable for participants 16 years and older. \nThursday MARCH 19: 7:00-8:30PM\nThe “Dark Basket” of a New Season: Poems for spring\, growth and courage \nInstructor: Sarah Crowley Chestnut \nTickets\, per class\nNon-members $30\nMembers $25 \nNot already a Member? SUMMARY:Southborough Salon Series: Mozart's Grand Partita and Dvorak's Serenade.
DESCRIPTION:We are absolutely delighted to partner with the Claflin Hall Symphony Orchestra to launch what we hope will become a cherished tradition — the Southborough Salon Series\, presented three times each year. \nOur first concert features a 16-piece “wind serenade” program anchored by two beloved masterpieces of the chamber repertoire: Mozart’s radiant Gran Partita and Dvořák’s joyful Serenade for Winds. Mozart’s Gran Partita (K.361) is a luminous and spirited work from his creative prime\, blending graceful elegance with heartfelt lyricism — a perfect showcase for the expressive colors of a wind ensemble. Dvořák’s Serenade\, written more than a century later\, captures the warmth and optimism of his Bohemian roots\, filled with dance-inspired rhythms and folk-tinged melodies. Together\, these works embody the blend of intimacy and grandeur that makes wind music so captivating. \nEven more special\, this concert marks the long-awaited return of live music to the historic Fayville Village Hall — for the first time in more than sixty years. We’re thrilled to celebrate both timeless repertoire and the renewal of a beloved local gathering place for art\, community\, and connection.
